Bahia Honda State Park

Atlantic side beach at Bahia Honda State Park

After leaving Key West and on the way back to stay in Key Largo, we stopped at Bahia Honda State Park at mile marker 37 for an afternoon beach break. At the entrance, there is a fee to pay at the gate ($8 per vehicle at the time of our visit). Below is a photo of the access road to the beach area.

We drove past some buildings. One building had a gift shop with a snack bar for food and another building that had a sign for kayak rentals. You can also sign up for a snorkeling tour at the park, but call ahead for reservations. See their website for more information here. Below is a photo looking back at the parking lot.

We decided to spend our day on the Atlantic side of the beach. On the other side of the parking lot, in the photo above, is the bay side beach. As we walked over to the beach area, we passed the restroom facilities which consist of several family style restrooms. In front of the restrooms are the spray off stations as seen in the photo below.

Proceeding to the beach area, there are several areas with picnic tables available.

Be prepared for the beach having sea grass on it. Posted is a sign explaining why and is pictured below.

Next photo is looking back at the beach area from the water.

There is a trail to walk for some great views and also includes part of the old bridge on this side of the beach. The path is nice and wide and has a gradual incline (pictured below).

Photo from the trail of the bay side below. In this photo you can see the concession buildings and the marina.

Stopping at Bahia Honda State Park was a great way to breakup our drive from Key West to Key Largo and enjoy some beach time.
